Biodonostia Health Research Institute fosters patient-focused translational research on a preferential basis, covering all research conducted in the historic area of Gipuzkoa within the scope of Osakidetza (the Basque Health Service) and aiming to improve citizens’ health through its multi-institutional and interdisciplinary collaborative structure.
The institutes’s research is structured into 7 Vertical Areas (Neuroscience, Liver and Gastrointestinal Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Oncology, Epidemiology and Public Health, Bioengineering and Systemic Diseases) and 3 Cross-Sectional Research Areas (Ageing, Precision Medicine and Innovation), which encompass roughly 350 researchers divided into 26 groups.
These groups contain technical and research staff belonging to the institute, affiliated with the various institutions that comprise it including Osakidetza (the Basque Health Service) and OSI Donostialdea (the institute’s core institution) as well as the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the Public Health Division of Gipuzkoa, BIOEF and the University of the Basque Country, in addition to the Gipuzkoa Science and Technology Park, the Technology Centres, the Vicomtech, Cidetec and Osatek research centres, the Matia Gerontological Institute, the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, and Onkologikoa. The institute also collaborates with other organisations such as the Ikerbasque Foundation and the Euskampus Foundation, and it boasts associated centres which are outside of the scope of its governing bodies, such as CIC nanoGUNE, CIC biomaGUNE, Tecnalia, CITA Alzheimer and the Dr Carlos Elosegui Foundation at Policlínica Gipuzkoa.
For its part, the institute consists of nine research platforms and nine support units comprised of technical and management staff.
On the whole, with a view to driving scientific advances Biodonostia Health Research Institute has managed to establish a unique structure that sets it apart from other institutes, by involving the most important technological players in the territory of Gipuzkoa.
